A Celebration of Dance

Updated: Mar 7, 2019

Sarafinh Dance Group

The St. John's Sarafinh Dance group was started in 2015 and is made up of a group of thirty young women from the outreach center. The dance group was started to help the young women of the outreach center grow in self-confidence! It also was a perfect way to help them increase in their emotional development and physical fitness level. The name was selected after the movie "Sarafina!". The movie tells the story of a strong young school girl who is not afraid to fight for her rights during apartheid.

St. John's staff member, Obatlhotse Keba Mosoane, started the group and continues to instruct them. Her heart's desire was that the girls were given an opportunity to be out of the streets and afforded the chance to be groomed into strong, confident young ladies.

An objective of St. John's is to help the children develop in their potential gifts.

The dance group is one of the ways in which we meet this objective. The dance group has excelled due to their hard work within their practices and trainings. The young ladies are all committed and very disciplined. They all work together to choreograph their dances and select the dance music and themes.

Excited group ready to leave for Cape Town!

In 2016, due to their excellent performances they were invited by the Anglican Ablaze members to perform in Cape Town. It was the first time ten of the girls had the opportunity to fly in a plane and see the sea! They stayed in Cape Town for five days and performed for a large audience, which included many South African celebrities. In 2017 they performed at Gallagher Estates in Gauteng. In 2018, they were once again invited to perform, this time in Durban. The girls were delighted to have the opportunity to dance for a large event again.

They dance to their own rhythm & style!

The group has developed it's own style and rhythm of dancing over the years, a wonderful combination of their personalities and love of dance. The biggest need we have at the moment is to fund raise for the dance group to be able to attend all the functions they are invited to perform at each year. It is our desire to host dance functions of our own in the future to raise awareness of our fabulous dance group!

If you are interested in having our dance group perform at an upcoming function, we would love to dance for you! Please contact Patrica Marite at: 082-857-1424.
