We would like to introduce you to Mr. Andrew Sefako. He is the head gardener here at St. John the Divine Orphans and Outreach. It is his passion to help serve the children through caring for the outreach center's vegetable garden. It is with great pride that he will show you all that has been planted and what the garden is currently producing.
Long, beautiful corn husks (mealies), a stable food for many people, thrive in the South African sun here in Mohlakeng. Delicious red tomatoes, big cauliflowers, and tasty spring onions all blossom under the care of Andrew and the St. John staff.
These wonderful vegetables are grown to not only be tasty supplements to the daily lunches of pap and sauce the children are served, but to also teach the children and community the value of planting their own vegetables for sustainability, and providing food for their own families.
At St. John's it is our desire that the children know the importance of not only "giving a man a fish, but also teaching him how to fish", so that one can provide for their families long term needs.
If you are interested in volunteering with us to develop more vegetable gardens within our outreach center or community, we would love your help!
